Message from the President

Shigeru Hayashi President and Representative Director

We produce and market environmentally friendly organic compounds from non-food biomass resources using proprietary bioprocesses. We have succeeded in developing a number of compounds previously considered difficult to synthesize through bioproduction and petrochemical synthesis.

We have established a green phenol production technology using a two-step process that we devised. This production technology is based on the results of NEDO projects commissioned by the GP Association (Members: Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth (RITE), Sumitomo Bakelite Co., Ltd.).
Green Phenol Development Co., Ltd., was established in 2014 to commercialize the production of phenol from sugars, which had previously been considered economically unfeasible given the limitations of conventional fermentation methods. This was the first time that a joint stock company was established from a technical research association. Subsequently, to expand our production line beyond phenol to high value-added (mainly aromatic) organic compounds, we changed our trade name to Green Chemicals Co., Ltd.(GCC), in 2018. We presently continue to develop additional useful organic compounds.

We are dedicated to helping achieve carbon neutral by 2050 by expanding our lineup of green chemical products and delivering them to a wide range of customers.

Company's Establishment History

February, 2010

Establishment of "Green Phenol and High Performance Phenolic Resin Manufacturing Technology Research Association"

The Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth (RITE) and Sumitomo Bakelite Co., Ltd. established the "Green Phenol and High Performance Phenolic Resin Production Technology Research Association" (GP Association) in February 2010 to develop fundamental technologies related to phenol production and phenolic resin production through the application of bioprocesses that use mixed sugars (C6, C5 sugars) extracted from (non-food) plant resources.

May, 2014

Organizational change to "Green Phenol Development Co., Ltd."

The GP Association was reorganized as "Green Phenol Development Co., Ltd." (GPD). This was the first joint stock company formed through a technical research partnership. From FY2014 to FY2017, GPD received a grant from the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) to promote technological development for the industrial production of phenol derived from non-food biomass. The company successfully developed an integrated production process using pilot facilities (bioconversion facility + condensation and purification facility).

April, 2018

Change of trading name to "Green Chemicals Co., Ltd."

Given that GPD's technology is capable of producing useful compounds in parallel with phenol production, the trade name of Green Phenol Development Corporation was changed to Green Chemicals Co., Ltd., (GCC) as of April 1, 2018. This was done to expand the business to include these useful compounds as rapidly as possible.

Awards

  • June, 2016

The Japan Association for Chemical Innovation (JACI) awarded us the 15th Green Sustainable Chemistry Award for our "Development of Plant-derived Phenol Production Technology."

  • February, 2019

We received an Excellence Award from the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) for "Technological Development for Industrial Production of Green Phenol Derived from Non-food Biomass."
